Eastleigh River Side is located immediately to the east/south east of Eastleigh town centre at the northern edge of Southampton International Airport and is one of the largest regeneration sites in South Hampshire. Around 130 hectares of land is available for development and redevelopment. Currently, around 2,000 people are employed at River Side. The regeneration area abuts two mainline railway stations (Eastleigh and Southampton Airport Parkway), Southampton International Airport and is in close proximity to the M3 and junction 5 of the M27.
The regeneration of this area will have a major and positive impact on Eastleigh Town Centre. Linkage and integration between the two areas must be delivered to ensure that synergy is achieved. This is aspiration is reflected in the “Town Centre Vision” which clearly illustrates the requirement for a strong pedestrian/cycle link between the town centre and Barton Park via Eastleigh railway station.
Eastleigh Borough Council is working with a number of agencies and stakeholders including the Partnership for Urban South Hampshire (PUSH), major land owners, infrastructure providers, Transport for South Hampshire and Hampshire County Council to realise the full potential of the River Side regeneration area. To this end, major feasibility studies have been commissioned, assessing technical and infrastructure delivery issues relating to the accessing of the strategic development sites within River Side.
As plans progress, strategies will be developed that will strengthen the complementarity between Eastleigh town centre and River Side. This will be achieved through the identification of appropriate development, design, hard and soft landscaping and physical connections.
