Energy Youth Centre officially opened its doors to young people in Eastleigh Town Centre on Friday 25th February 2011.
The Mayor of Eastleigh Councillor John Caldwell and Secretary of State for Climate Change Chris Huhne MP were both on hand to officially open the facility.
Mayor of Eastleigh Councillor John Caldwell says “Eastleigh has waited a long time for a centre for young people in the heart of the town. My congratulations go to the young people for the enthusiastic part they played in the design and fundraising for the scheme. He added “This is a wonderful opportunity for them to use it and help to expand it to be an even more thriving place in the future.”
Eastleigh Borough Council in partnership with Hampshire County Council Children’s Services worked together on an exciting scheme to transform the town centre location into a much needed youth facility.
The scheme cost around £680,000 and included a major repair and refurbishment. The youth centre scheme will provide a large flexible space to allow a wide range of activities to take place. The building has been refurbished to a high standard and has included a new roof, new windows and the provision of additional rooms. Other facilities will include a refreshment area, a space to meet and socialise with friends, pool table, together with meeting/interview rooms and an Internet area. On site services will include informal drop-ins to offer information such as careers advice and counselling etc. One of the most popular features is the new recording studio which will be staffed by students from Southampton University and is a feature specifically requested by young people when the building was being designed.
